A mass-market serum is a good object for learning label literacy, because the formula is published in full and the front-of-pack wording is unusually specific. Pairing matters, because some peptide raw materials are sold as pre-mixed blends in which two INCI names always travel together. A label can therefore advertise three peptides from what is effectively one purchased blend plus one additional ingredient.

Names also encode structure. A palmitoyl prefix means a sixteen-carbon fatty acid has been attached to the N-terminus, which makes the molecule more lipophilic and more at home in the oily part of an emulsion. An acetyl prefix means a two-carbon acyl group blocks the same terminus. Neither prefix changes the residue count of the chain itself, so a hexapeptide sold under a tri-peptide umbrella is still a six-residue molecule. Read the number inside the INCI name, not the number on the front of the box. The copper-complexed example is its own subject and is handled in glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine complexed with copper(II).

Finding the Actives Inside the Ingredient List

INCI declarations are ordered by concentration down to one percent, and below that threshold the order is arbitrary. Aqua comes first in almost every serum because a serum is mostly water. The next three to six names are the working base: a humectant such as glycerin or propylene glycol, a solvent such as propanediol, a silicone such as dimethicone, and a texture polymer such as carbomer or hydroxyethylcellulose. Concentrations fall as you move down the list. Peptide raw materials are used at fractions of a percent and are usually supplied already diluted in a carrier, so finding them well below the humectants is normal rather than suspicious.

Because the peptides sit under the one percent line, their order relative to each other carries no concentration information at all. The tail of the list is worth a second look: preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate, a chelator such as disodium EDTA, and fragrance with its individually listed allergens such as linalool or limonene. A practical reading sequence is to identify the water, identify the humectant and emollient base, find the peptide names, then check the tail for the preservative system and fragrance. That gives you the shape of the formula without any number the label does not print.

The Base, the Fragrance and the Packaging Format

The base does the immediate sensory work, and it accounts for nearly all the volume in the bottle. Glycerin is a small triol that binds water and slows its evaporation from the skin surface. Propylene glycol and butylene glycol do comparable work while keeping the formula fluid and helping other ingredients dissolve. Dimethicone lays down a thin flexible film that reduces tack and produces the slip most people read as silkiness.
